Embedded question | Indirect question | Embedded Sentence

প্রথমে আমাদের জানতে হবে Embedded question / Indirect question / Embedded Sentence কাকে বলে?

যদি কোন Principal clause এর সাথে Subordinate clause যুক্ত হয়ে পরোক্ষভাবে প্রশ্নবোধক বাক্য তৈরি করে অথবা Subordinate clause এর আগে Interrogative Sentence যুক্ত হয়ে প্রশ্নবোধক বাক্য গঠন করে তাকে Embedded question / Indirect question / Embedded Sentence বলে। আবার এটি এক ধরনের Complex Sentence।

যদি আরও সহজভাবে বলি, কোনো একটি প্রশ্ন বা বিবৃতির মধ্যে অন্য আর একটি প্রশ্ন যুক্ত করাই হচ্ছে Embedded Question।

Embedded Question Example

সাধারণ প্রশ্ন : সে কি জানে? Does he know? [ Direct question, Informal ]

আমি কে? Who am I? [ Direct question, Informal ]

Embedded question : সে কি জানে আমি কে? Does he know who I am? [ Indirect question, Polite, Formal }

Note: এখানে, ( Does he know who I am? ) এর প্রথম অংশ ( Does he know ) হলো Principal clause এবং দ্বিতীয় অংশ ( who I am? ) হলো Subordinate clause। আবার, ( আমি কে? ) Direct question এর ক্ষেত্রে হলো Who am I? কিন্তু Embedded question এর ক্ষেত্রে তা পরিবর্তন হয়ে who I am? হয়। মনে রাখার বিষয় Principal clause সবসময় আগে বসবে। মূল কথাটা হচ্ছে, একটি Sentence এর দুইটি অংশ থাকলে, পরের অংশটি প্রশ্নবোধক Structure না হয়ে, Assertive Sentence এর Structure হবে। চলুন, নিচে Embedded question সম্পর্কে আরও বিস্তারিত জানা যাক।

Embedded Sentence

Embedded question সাধারণত ৩ টি Sentence এ ব্যবহার করা হয়। 1. Interrogative Sentence 2. Assertive Sentence 3. Imperative Sentence.

1. Interrogative Embedded Sentence

Example: তুমি কি জানো আমার বাবার নাম কী?

  = Do you know what my father’s name is?

2. Assertive Embedded Sentence

Example: আমি জানি তোমার বাবার নাম কী।

  = I know what your father’s name is.

3. Imperative Embedded Sentence

Example: আমাকে বলো তোমার বাবার নাম কী।

  = Tell me what your father’s name is.

Note: পরের অংশটুকু অবশ্যই প্রশ্নবোধক Structure না হয়ে, Assertive Sentence এর Structure হবে।

Embedded Question Structure

Embedded Question Expressions + Wh word + Subject + Verb + Extension

Example: আমি ভুলে গেছি কেন তিনি আমার সমালোচনা করেছিলেন।

  = I have forgotten why he criticized me.

তুমি কি জানো ইংরেজি ক্লাসটা কখন শুরু হতে যাচ্ছে?

= Do you know when the English class is going to start?

Note: Assertive এবং Imperative Embedded Sentence এর ক্ষেত্রে Sentence এর শেষে Full stop ( . ) হবে। যদি Interrogative Embedded Question হয় তাহলে Sentence এর শেষে Question mark ( ? ) হবে।

Embedded Question Rules

1. Present / Past Indefinite Tense এর ক্ষেত্রে Embedded Question করার সময় ( Do / Does / Did ) বসবে না।

Direct Question: কীভবে সে সেখানে গিয়েছিলো? ( How did he go there? )

Embedded Question: তুমি কি আমাকে বলতে পারো কীভাবে সে সেখানে গিয়েছিলো? ( Could you tell me how he went there? )

Incorrect: Could you tell me how did he go there? 

Direct Question: কেন সে আমাকে ঘৃণা করে? ( Why does he hate me? )

Embedded Question: তুমি কি জানো কেন সে আমাকে ঘৃণা করে? ( Do you know why he hates me? )

Incorrect: Do you know why does he hate me? 

2. Embedded Question এর ক্ষেত্রে Verbal Contractions ব্যবহার করা যাবে না। 

Direct Question: তারা কোথায়? ( Where are they? )

Embedded Question: আমি ভাবছি তারা কোথায়? ( I wonder where they are? ) [ Not: they’re ]

Incorrect: I wonder where they’re? 

Incorrect: I wonder where are they?  

Direct Question: কয়টা বাজে? ( What time is it? )

Embedded Question: তুমি কি আমাকে বলতে আপত্তি করবে কয়টা বাজে? ( Would you mind telling me what time it is? ) [ Not: it’s ]

Incorrect: Would you mind telling me what time it’s? 

Incorrect: Would you mind telling me what time is it?  

3. Embedded Question আবার Infinitive দিয়েও প্রকাশ করা যেতে পারে।

Direct Question: এখন আমার কী করা উচিত? ( What should I do now? )

Embedded Question: তুমি কি আমাকে বলতে পারো এখন আমার কী করা উচিত? ( Can you tell me what I should do now? )

Infinitive: Can you tell me what to do now?

Infinitive: Please tell me how to play football.

Infinitive: I’m not sure what to say.

Incorrect: Can you tell me what should I do now? 

4. যদি কোনো বাক্যে Wh word না থাকে তাহলে if / Whether ব্যবহার করে Embedded Question করতে হবে।

Direct Question: সে কি মারা গিয়াছে? ( Has he died? )

Embedded Question: তুমি কি আমাকে বলতে পারো সে মারা গিয়াছে কিনা? ( Could you tell me if / whether he has died?

Incorrect: Could you tell me if has he died?

Note: Embedded Question ভালো ভাবে বুঝতে হলে আমাদের Clause সম্পর্কে ভালো ধারনা থাকতে হবে। আর উপরের নিয়মগুলো চর্চা করতে হবে।
